Northern Vietnam is one of the world’s great motorbike playgrounds — limestone karst, cloud-topped passes, waterfalls and remote hill-tribe villages. Here are the five best motorbike routes in the north for 2026, from the iconic to the wonderfully off-beat.
1. The Ha Giang Loop — the icon
About 350km over 3–4 days through a UNESCO Geopark of soaring karst. The highlight is the legendary Ma Pi Leng Pass above the turquoise Nho Que River, plus Dong Van, Lung Cu and endless switchbacks. If you ride only one route in Vietnam, make it this one — see our self-ride vs Easy Rider guide.

2. Ha Giang + Cao Bang extension
Have 7–10 days? Continue east from Ha Giang to Cao Bang for a completely different landscape: forested mountains, Ban Gioc Waterfall (one of Southeast Asia’s largest, straddling the China border), the cathedral-sized Nguom Ngao Cave, and peaceful Ba Be Lake. Upgraded roads in 2026 now link Meo Vac to Cao Bang without backtracking.
3. The Northwest Loop: Moc Chau, Son La & Dien Bien Phu
Less touristy and brilliant for experienced riders. Climb from Hanoi through Mai Chau and the tea plateaus of Moc Chau, push west through Son La, and reach Dien Bien Phu, site of the 1954 battle that ended French colonial rule. Excellent riding and rich history.
4. Sapa & the Lao Cai mountains
Famous rice terraces, the towering O Quy Ho Pass (one of Vietnam’s highest) and views of Fansipan, the “Roof of Indochina.” Great as a stand-alone trip or combined with Ha Giang.
5. The Northeast & Ba Be Lake
Quieter than the west: limestone scenery from Ha Giang through Cao Bang to Ba Be Lake, one of Vietnam’s largest natural freshwater lakes, ringed by forest and ethnic homestays. Perfect for travellers who want calm and few crowds.
